Velocity Accelerates Into Touchscreen Smartphones

Newbie means business...

You don’t get many new players in the mobile phone market for rather obvious multinational-competition-based-reasons but here’s a plucky little firm giving it a go…

UK based Velocity Mobile is a nine month collaboration between the innovative team which launched ‘A Living Picture’ (snaffled up by i-mate) and Inventec – an experienced laptop and mobile devices manufacturer which has been doing the rounds for more than 30 years. So what have they come up with?

The ‘Velocity 103’ follows up the BlackBerry-esque ‘Velocity 111’ which has been doing the rounds since CTIA in April and is the company’s first touchscreen device. Like the 111 it is based on Windows Mobile 6.1 and features a highly customised finger-friendly skin as is de rigeur these days along with HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 2.8in VGA LCD and 2MP camera with second front facing 0.3MP shooter for video calls.

A microSD expansion slot, TV/VGA out and 256MB ROM/128 RAM finish things off as you might expect but the real differentiator Velocity is going for here is ‘Velocity Over The Air’ (VOTA) updates meaning customers will no longer need to plug handsets into PCs or even upgrade to get new features. Updates will take place on a monthly basis and feature everything from Windows Mobile patches to new software versions.

The Velocity 103 is available for pre-order immediately at Expansys with a sim-free, unlocked price of £334.99. Shipping starts in September and, you know what, it might just have a chance…
