Valve is going out of its way to encourage people to modify its ambitious Steam Controller.
The Steam Controller was publicly released back in November, introducing a unique PC games controller that combined elements of traditional console control pads and a good old fashioned mouse.
Not everyone has taken to this bold new approach, understandably, which might explain why Valve is encouraging people to rip the Steam Controller up and rebuild it to their liking.
Over on the Steam Community website, Valve has released the detailed CAD drawings for the Steam Controller, and is opening it out under Creative Commons licensing. The company says that it is “eager to see the accessories and variations that come from your creativity.”
The only limitation here is that you’ll have to get in contact with Valve if you want to sell your mutant creation.
“The archive contains several eDrawings viewer files: from Creo Express and native Modelling, to neutral exchange and 3D print files – for compatibility with a wide variety of your design tools,” explains Valve.

In order to kickstart the creative tweaking, Valve has also released some of its own alternate designs for the Battery Door (one of which is pictured above), which allow you to carry your USB wireless receiver with you.
