Valve quietly beta testing DualShock 4 support in Steam

It seems Valve is finally making good on its promise to provide DualShock 4 support in its Steam platform, as the company has begun beta testing.

Steam beta client users now have the ability to use the PS4 controller in the same way as the Steam Controller, mapping actions to specific buttons.

It means gamers will be able to use the PS4 gamepad with all non-VR titles in the Steam library, including those that don’t come with native controller support.

Using Sony’s gamepad with Steam makes a lot of sense, as the company’s own Steam Controller shares a lot in common with the PS4 equivalent.

Both feature a similar layout, but the DualShock 4’s touchpad and gyro sensor can also be mapped to the movement of a mouse or joystick.

That should make navigating mouse-only menus a lot easier with the gamepad, as well as making tilt-controls possible in certain games.

The DualShock support is currently only available in the Steam beta client, and can be activated by using a special menu item.

An update on the Steam community reads: “Note that this is a beta release. Enable in Big Picture settings Add/Test Controller settings.

“When enabled, PS4 controllers will have access to the same sort of customization/configuration support as Steam Controllers, including native API support.

“PS4 Controllers using this system can map the trackpad, gyro, buttons, etc. to keyboard, mouse, or x-input outputs and can make use of action sets, touch menus, radial menus, and so forth.”

We’re expecting the DualShock 4 support to roll out to all Steam users very soon, so stay tuned for more.
