Valve: 26 Sept Is Day Of Defeat

Classic title gets the Source treatment.

If you’re a fan of online gaming you’ve no doubt played, become addicted to and tried taking the 12 step recovery plan to get yourself off Counter Strike. Step one in that process is the methadone of online shooters: Day of Defeat, but that was before its revamp.

You see, coming on 26 September is Day of Defeat: Source, the highly secretive latest classic title do-over from Half Life creator Valve. I say “secretive” because even though the release date was announced late on Friday, the first person shooter maestro has refused to give out a single screen shot.

Instead, it chooses to taunt us with sentences like: “DoD: Source takes the classic team play of DoD and expands the experience with Source, the engine technology Valve created for Half-Life 2 and it’s next generation of games. With this technology, DoD: Source offers state of the art graphics with optimized versions of popular maps and all new player, weapon and world models, plus support for HDR lighting.” Sods!

The company is also promising that the advanced rag doll and real world physics of Source will have a dramatic effect on the revamped game play with “physically stimulated” (its words, not mine) objects throughout each map.

Day of Defeat: Source will be available via Steam for $19.95, with pre-load and pre-orders taken from today. Naturally enough, it will be free to users who purchased the Half Life 2 Silver or Gold Steam offers (Bronze owners, I bet you wish you’d paid that extra $10!).

Just one question: With our Counter Strike methadone gone, what are we meant to turn to after an unrelenting eight hour stint of virtual slaughter? Doom 3 gives us nightmares, Far Cry is way too good, Destroy All Humans is a little too good, Cold Winter ditto. Oh hang on, I think I’ve at last discovered a use for Chrome Specforce
