Vaios Get Blu-ray (One Gets HDMI)

Well, they weren't going to get HD DVD.

After labelling the outrageously expensive and disappointingly received PS3 “probably too cheap” last week, Sony President Ken Kutaragi clearly thinks we’re all made of money. Well, if you are I have two pieces of advice for you: 1. Don’t stand too near any open flames and 2. Check these out…

Saying all the right things to the hidden millionaire inside all of us just waiting to get out is the Vaio Type A, a power packed Blu-ray burner sporting laptop with HDMI port. It will be user configurable but can top out with a 17in 1920 x 1080 screen, Core Duo T2500 processor, nVidia GeForce Go 7600 GT graphics cards with 256MB VRAM and up to 200GB of hard drive space using two drives in RAID 0 array.

Wireless b/g, Bluetooth, an integrated webcam, MemoryStick reader, ExpressCard 54 and PC Card slots also all make an appearance here while VGA and S-Video ports have not been forgotten despite the spotlight clearly being shone on our HDCP certified friend. You’ll have to drop over £2,000 for a Type A when they arrive in the next few months but if you’re considerably loaded/don’t mind pinning your flag early in the new format war/unbelievably impatient you can pre-order one from Sony’s website now.

If you’re looking for something of a more substantial size or simply don’t get out the house much then you’ll be pleased to know Blu-ray has also found a home on Sony’s desktop range. The Vaio R series (clearly it is going to run out of letters soon, then it’ll be onto the Greek, Chinese and Russian alphabets) are also available with a BD burner and can pack up to a 3.6GHz Intel Pentium D960 processor, 3GB RAM and an insane 2TB of storage via four 500GB RAID arranged drives.

A choice of 20in 1680 x 1050 or 23in 1920 x 1200 displays come with as do digital TV tuners, though given the Herculean horsepower on show I’m rather surprised to see graphics are limited to an nVidia GeForce 7600 GT with 256MB VRAM.

The R Series will appear on shelves in June, though the price has yet to be set. Still, you know if you have to ask you can’t afford it…
