The UK’s internet speeds aren’t great, and no one is surprised

If you needed any proof that the UK’s internet speeds aren’t quite world-leading, the new Speedtest Global Index has you covered.

The rankings have been compiled by Speedtest.net, which has now started to use its vast amounts of data to produce monthly aggregate speed reports for countries worldwide.

And things aren’t looking too good for the UK in July, which comes in at number 40 in the rankings for mobile data speeds for last month, with a 25.83mbps overall download score and 10.91mbps upload speed.

In fairness, that’s out of 122 countries included in that particular list, but we’re still lagging behind Slovakia and Cyprus.

Our fair isle did manage to beat our friends across the pond in the states, which came in at number 46, while Norway came in at number one, closely followed by The Netherlands and Hungary.

Meanwhile, things are slightly better when it comes to fixed-line broad speeds, with the UK coming in at number 24 out of 133, with a 49.22mbps overall download score and 9.55mbps upload score.

Singapore is apparently the best place to be if you want lightning-fast broadband, with South Korea and Hong Kong making up the rest of the top three.

Speedtest’s ranking system will now be offering monthly reports, so it will be interesting to see how trends change over time as countries invest more in the necessary infrastructure to improve speeds.

The lists show whether individual countries have dropped, moved up, or stayed static on the list, and you can click on an individual country to see 12 months’ worth of data “including historic download and upload speeds over mobile and fixed broadband”.

Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, says it wants users to “take this data and use it to tell stories that help make the internet faster in your home country and around the world.”

The company will be updating the Speedtest Global Index with data based on the previous month at the beginning of every month.
