UPDATED: UK Web Connections Falling

Is the credit crunch already hitting us THAT hard...? UPDATE: With what you all really wanted to see...

Ok, we get it, the economy is ”bad” – ten kinds of nasty – but is there still really any excuse for this…

In news which makes our hearts (and my Movember Mo weep) the Office for National Statistics has confirmed that for the first time since March 2005 the number of Internet connections in the UK is falling.

The drop is minor – 0.4 per cent to be exact between June and September 2008 – but for a society which is meant to be embracing the Web in almost exponential numbers the trend is somewhat surprising (I can hear our salesmen quaking in their boots from here – chin up suit and tie types). Consequently however it does mean that UK online growth year on year is a meagre 0.9 per cent, virtually a stand still – so get your Auntie Ethels and Uncle Alberts into World of Warcraft people!

Against this broadband is flourishing with a whopping 94.1 per cent of all Internet connections now going online via the (potentially) speedy service while dial up has decreased 18.6 per cent – a happy sign that the whir-crush-buzz-crush-whir days are increasingly behind us.

Also encouraging is – despite average UK broadband speeds falling – the number of users attaining base speeds above 2Mbit is slowly increasing (from 55.8 per cent in June to 57.7 per cent in September).

So in sum, it’s not all doom and gloom but come on folks, the Internet is a glorious place these days offering far more than GPU graphs and compromising images of the fairer sex (is that a negative?) so hop aboard and let’s get the World surfing. Oh and (to please our sales guys) get everyone to ”check out TR”…

*cough, choke, struggles with self publication issues*

PS – And Movember Donations for prostate cancer… don’t forget. Ok, enough and I shall post a picture on this very page.

”’Update:”’ OK, OK, here you go guys… just don’t forget that donation – large or small!
