Ubisoft confirms virtual reality games for 2016

Ubisoft has confirmed it plans to release games for virtual reality devices next year.

The company says a ‘certain number’ of titles are currently in development, but won’t ship until VR headsets begin retailing in stores in 2016.

According to company chief Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft is waiting for devices such as the HTC Vive (due later this year), the Oculus Rift (due early 2016), and the Sony Project Morpheus (due early 2016).

“We are very bullish about the potential,” explained the Ubisoft boss. “We think it is going to bring more players to the universe of video games, and we are going to come with our brands.”

He continued: “We will have a few titles in the first year and we will have regular games coming following that.”

Guillemot hopes the proliferation of headsets plus the potential for increased immersion will help push VR into the mainstream.

“We believe a lot in virtual reality because we see that it is really giving a chance for gamers to be more immersed in worlds, and we are developing a certain number of games that are going to take advantage of these new possibilities,” said Guillemot.

“We are working on the different brands we have to see how we can take advantage of those new possibilities, but making sure we also don’t suffer from what comes with it, which is the difficulty to play a long time with those games,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Ubisoft has spoken about VR; in March, the company revealed headset manufacturers must hit a sales milestone before games can launch effectively for the platform.

“VR would need to sell at least one million units to be viable for development,” said Lionel Raynaud, Ubisoft’s Creative VP, speaking back in March.
