Two New Zunes On The Horizon?

And a release anywhere outside of the US...?

Since Microsoft’s heavily hyped Zune launched back in November to a ripple of apathy little has been heard, but could two new versions of the player (s)re(/s)invigorate interest in the brand?

According to reports Stateside, Gates’ minions held a super secret event earlier this week in which not one, but two new Zunes were unveiled.

The first is alleged to be a smaller flash memory based nano competitor with a comparatively larger screen but bulkier dimensions that received a “not bad” response (hardly thrilling). The second is an upgrade to the original Zune (above) again with an enlarged screen (no word on whether it was widescreen) and iPod competing (read: 80GB) storage capacity.

There was no word about any prices, release dates, boasted functionality (decent wireless implementation would be a start) or even if they would receive a global release but – if true – expect rumblings in the next couple of months.

Personally speaking, if these second generation Zunes ”are” on their way then I believe it would be hard for Microsoft to justify another US only life cycle. After all beta testing on the Yanks is all fine and good, but saying you can’t get it right on your next generation is just plain embarrassing…
