Twitter testing ‘TV Timelines’ for on-air second-screen experience

Twitter is currently trialling a new service called ‘TV Timelines’, a new platform for discussing on-air TV shows.

The report comes courtesy of Mashable via (The Next Web), which claims the social network is looking to ‘change the face of second-screen viewing’.

It appears to be an in-app portion of Twitter that offers up tweets, videos, GIFs, and photos, all of which relate to a specific TV show.

There are three feed columns – Highlights, Media, and All – that allow users to quickly navigate between various content types relating to the programme.

The feature is apparently being tested via Twitter’s iPhone app, although only a limited selection of users currently have access to it.

Users are granted access by using particular hashtags relating to a specific TV show. The users then receive an invite to try out TV Timelines for that show.

It’s not yet clear when Twitter plans to roll out this feature to all users, nor when the service will integrate the feature onto Android/web platforms.

It’s an exciting prospect, however, and could pave the way for Twitter-exclusive content.

There’s also a good chance TV networks will try to make bank on the service by integrating advertisements directly into the feed. Arguably, however, the feeds are an advertisement already.

Twitter is currently one of the most popular social media services, boasting 284 million monthly active users worldwide.
