Twitter reportedly launching standalone Music app for iOS

Twitter is set to enter the music streaming business with a new app for Apple’s iOS devices, according to multiple reports this week.

On Thursday Bloomberg added weight to a scoop from CNET claiming the social network plans to launch a service that will stream songs from the popular SoundCloud service and also send users to song previews in iTunes.

In a further twist, the Twitter Music app will be powered by the We The Hunted music discovery app, which according to the various reports, was purchased by Twitter late last year in preparation for the launch.

Although no confirmation has been received from Twitter, SoundCloud or We The Hunted, CNET sources say the app will be launching sometime this month.

The report claims it will have Twitter branding, but will not
require users to have a Twitter account in order to make use of the
service. It would allow users to share SoundCloud songs on Twitter as well as stream them directly to their own handsets.

According to the report, Twitter Music will have four main tabs; Following will showcase artists that the user and their friends are following, while #NowPlaying will serve up songs tweeted by your friends. The other two tabs are pretty self explanatory: Popular and Emerging.

The news follows the launch of Twitter’s quirky little Vine video-sharing app, which allows users to post 6-second montages of videos shot on iOS devices.

It also comes after Facebook’s recent decision to refocus its news feed with a dedicated section for the music its members are listening to. We’re intrigued to see what comes of this and, judging by the reports, we may not have to wait too long.
