Twitter partners with SoundCloud to bring audio to tweets

Twitter has announced a new way for users to enjoy music by introducing new Audio Cards that can be played from within tweets.

The company has partnered with SoundCloud, which is opening up its library of tracks and podcasts to Twitter users to enable audio content to sit within Tweets.

Twitter users will be able to play songs with just one tap, while those enjoying the social network through the iOS and Android apps will be able to “dock” audio to tracks continue playing when the user continues to browse their timeline.

The feature will mirror the inclusion of YouTube and Vine clips within tweets and thankfully will require users to manually hit play, rather thn a multitude of audio tracks auto-playing as soon as a user begins scanning his or her Twitter timeline.

The announcement comes after reports claiming Twitter was preparing to buy SoundCloud earlier this year, presumably for this reason. Twitter says it has a host of other partners in the works, presumably including Spotify whom it hooked up with for the failed Twitter Music experiment.

“With a single tap, the Twitter Audio Card lets you discover and listen to audio directly in your timeline on both iOS and Android devices,” wrote Twitter’s Richard Slater on the company’s official blog.

“Throughout your listening experience, you can dock the Audio Card and keep listening as you continue to browse inside the Twitter app. We’re launching this new audio card in partnership with third-party streaming services. The first partner for streaming on Twitter is SoundCloud.”

On first read it appears this musical venture has a far greater chance of success than poor old Twitter Music. What do you think? Share your thoughts below.
