Twitter now has 302 million users, but misses revenue target

Twitter now has 302 million monthly active users, marking it as one of the most popular social networks in the world.

The micro-blogging service made the announcement during its first-quarter earnings call, although the results didn’t quite live up to expectations.

Analysts predicted that the company would rake in $456 million in revenue, but Twitter fell short of the target by $20 million.

Twitter put this miss down to its acquisition of TellApart in the first quarter of the year.

Regardless, the company still has a strong user-base, seeing growth in active users by 18 per cent year-on-year.

It also had 288 million in the previous quarter, which shows that the social network is far from ailing.

The company also confirmed that its mobile active users make up 80 per cent of the total.

But how does Twitter weigh up against its social network rivals? Back in December, Instagram confirmed it had around 300 million users, which comes in under Twitter’s new total.

Of course, we’re also four months down the line, and it’s likely Instagram has whipped up more than 2 million users over that period.

While not strictly a social network, cross-platform messenger WhatsApp revealed it has 800 million monthly active users earlier this month. Moreover, its current growth rate means it’s on track for 1 billion users by the year’s end.

Facebook, meanwhile, leads the bunch, boasting a staggering 1.441 billion users worldwide, as of Q1 2015.
