Twitter wants to own news with UK Moments launch

It’s always been a source for news, but now Twitter wants to help shape the agenda.

Twitter has finally launched Moments in the UK, bringing its curated news service to the country.

It’s the first time the service has been available in a European country, after the initial US launch about a month ago.

Moments is Twitter’s way of capitalizing on the huge swathes of news content posted to the platform.

Before Moments, the best way to catch up on news via Twitter was through hashtags, or dedicated news outlet accounts.

However, Moments is curated by a dedicated team of employees, hoping to bank on breaking news.

“People across the world send millions of Tweets every day,” writes Twitter. “They’re breaking news, sharing thoughts, highlighting their passions, and supporting each other all the time.”

The company continues: “We know this means that it can be hard to keep up, and that’s the motivation behind our latest project, Moments.”

But what sort of content will we see? Well right now, there’s coverage of the UK astronaut launch, and the US Star Wars premiere

While most of the news will be UK-centric, there will also be occasional content based around the US and elsewhere.

“You probably won’t get baseball, you might get a bit of Trump,” explains Jo Geary, who runs Moments in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, speaking at the London launch event.

Geary also revealed that the entire Moments curation team “all have journalism backgrounds”. However, a number of media partners are also on board to provide content.

“We’ve chosen partners who we have great relationships with,” says
Geary. A spokesperson told TrustedReviews that Buzzfeed was one such

Twitter, which currently has 15 million users in the UK, also revealed that it hopes to bring the service to other countries in the future.
