Toshiba Unveils Trio of Excite Android Tablets

Toshiba has revealed three new models in the Excite series, known as the “AT” series in the UK. The Toshiba Excite 13, 10 and 7.7 are all Android 4.0 tablets and – perhaps contrary to what you might assume – the Toshiba Excite 10 is the cheapest of the lot, starting at $450.

The Toshiba Excite 10 is a little more conventional than the other two. It’s a re-worked version of the Toshiba AT200, which we had a lukewarm reaction to at review. However, if it’s cheap enough it could prove a winner.

It’s a little thicker and heavier than the AT200, has a 1,280 x 800 pixel, 10.1in IPS screen, 1GB of RAM, micro-sized USB and HDMI ports and – the one unusual bit – a full-size SD card slot. A 5MP camera sits on the back, with a 2MP sensor on-hand for video chat.Toshiba Excite

The 16GB Excite 10 costs $450, the 32GB $530 and the 64GB $650. Not all that cheap, then.

The most unusual of the bunch is the Excite 13. As its name
suggests, it has a 13in screen – a 13.3in IPS screen to be exact – with a 1,600 x 900 pixel resolution. A Tegra 3 quad-core processor runs the
show, supported by 1GB of RAM. It has a microUSB socket, microHDMI video
output, four speaker units, a full-size SD card slot and dual 5/2MP

UK pricing and availability hasn’t yet been revealed,
but it’ll cost $650 for the 32GB edition and $750 for the 64GB version.
Neither comes with 3G – these are Wi-Fi only tabs. Aside from coming at a
premium and being a large-sized device, we wonder how well Android apps
will scale to the unusual resolution.

The new model we have the highest hopes for is the Toshiba Excite 7.7. It weighs around 340g, is under 8mm thick, and has an AMOLED screen – like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. It comes in 16GB and 32GB flavours, and offers a microSD slot. You miss out on the HDMI video output of the larger tablets, but it is otherwise fully-featured. The 16GB model costs $500 in the US, and the 32GB model $580.

Toshiba unveiled the three tablets in the US, and hasn’t divulged any plans for the UK as yet. However, with features and prices that aren’t exactly eye-poppingly attractive, we have to wonder whether the new Excite range is anything to get excited about.
