Toshiba Unveils Portable & High End HD Camcorders

Something for everyone - apart from HD DVD lovers obviously...

After admitting the defeat of HD DVD Toshiba certainly hasn’t sat around moping. In the last week it has bought Sony’s CELL CPU business outright, hit the high notes with its latest Regzas and now its spruced up its camcorders…

At the top end it has introduced the ‘A’ and ‘K’ series of Gigashot HDers and for those looking for High Def thrills in cheaper and ultra portable package: the Camileo Pro range.

Addressing the Gigashots first, the A is the king of the pair with Full HD video recording (1920 x 1080 pixels), a 10x optical zoom lens, up to 100GB of storage and a large 3in widescreen LCD. The K series can match almost of this, but manages to record only at 720p (1280 x 720 pixels). Both also feature an HDMI output, SD/SDHC memory expansion slot and allow for video and stills to be edited onboard.

At just 78.1 x 135.4 x 79mm and weighing a mere 495g, the A series isn’t going to weigh down even the most feeble of enthusiasts and while I suspect the K to be similarly shoulder-friendly Tosh hasn’t dished out those specs.

Giving Sanyo’s Xacti HD1000 a scare is the titchy stakes is the ‘Camileo Pro HD’ (top, right). Boasting 720p video recording, a 5MP CMOS sensor with 3x optical zoom, 128MB of integrated storage and an SDHC expansion slot (supporting cards up to 32GB), the Camileo makes for an intriguing option. A 2.5in LCD, HDMI and USB 2.0 output plus MP3 playback also add to its charms and it even works as a webcam at VGA resolution.

As for pricing and availability, the Gigashots will launch in February with the A series retailing from £679-849 and the K series going for £449-499 – both dependent on capacity. The Camileo will appear in April for just £149.99. All prices include VAT.

In all, a well deserved pat on the back for Toshiba this week for keeping its spirits up. Just don’t mention you-know-what…
