Toshiba Brings 256GB Laptop & 32GB Netbook SSDs

Welcome additions all round.

A couple of pieces of happy news here to soften the fact that Monday mornings suck…

Toshiba has announced that it will be expanding its NAND flash-based line up with the addition of a sizeable 2.5in 256GB SSD for laptops and a handy 32GB SSD for netbooks which can also be used in other mobile and peripheral products.

Dealing with the big fella first (product number ‘THNS256GE8BC’) we discover its memory is mounted on just a 70.6 x 53.6 x 3mm platform meaning a) it’s incredibly light, b) there’ s a lot of room in that 2.5in shell and c) we really need to make dedicated SSD laptops which dump the bulky HDD form factors.

In terms of the performance the unit is fairly midrange by the sky-rocketing speeds of this emerging market with the 256GBer hitting 120MB per second read and 70MB per second write over a standard SATA 3Gbit interface.

As for the netbooks they are treated to 8GB (THNSA08G0P4L), 16GB (THNSA16G1P4L) and 32GB (THNSA32G1P4L) flash SATA modules capable of 80MB per second read and 50MB per second write speeds which should be plenty fast enough for the wallet friendly little chaps.

Encouragingly, while SSD prices are almost never discussed, samples are available to manufacturers immediately with mass product beginning in ‘Q4’ which our ever optimistic hearts pray could mean ”from Wednesday”…
