Tosh Launches First HD DVD Rewriter For Laptops

Targets all work, no fun brigade.

Tosh is certainly doing everything it can to help its HD DVD format beat the odds/Blu-ray and after launching the first laptop to sport an HD DVD writer in January, it has now gone one better.

This week the company has announced the world’s first slim HD DVD re-writer for laptops. Called the ‘SD-L912A’ the drive is being promoted primarily for backing up large volumes of data from a PC hard drive, the reason: it doesn’t playback copyrighted HD movies (unless you get all AnyDVD HD on its ass).

“Our new drive delivers the perfect combination of high capacity storage, outstanding audio and visual playback and the complete flexibility of the re-writable format,” said Martin Larsson, Tosh Europe’s General Manager.

So *deep breath* I’ll (bravely) break down all the SD-L912A’s speeds:

HD DVD-R 2x; HD DVD-R DL: 1x (bit of a bummer); HD DVD-RW: 1x; HD DVD-RW DL: 1x; DVD-RAM: 3x; DVD-R SL: 4x; DVD-R DL: 2x; DVD-RW: 4x; DVD+R: 4x; DVD+R DL: 2.4x; DVD+RW: 4x; CD-R: 16x; CD-RW: 10x.

HD DVD-R: 2.4x; HD DVD-R DL: 1x; HD DVD-RW: 1x, HD DVD-RW DL: 1x; HD DVD-ROM: 2.4x; DVD: 8x; CD: 24x.

This performance comes courtesy of an 8MB buffer and with an MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) of 60,000 hours the SD-L912A should be in it for the long haul. For laptop weight watchers amongst you the drive itself measures 128 x 12.7 x 126mm and weighs just 170g.

So Tosh has provided us with every detail we ever wanted to know (and many more besides) but – remarkably – it then left out the important part. Under the headline ‘Pricing and Availability’ the company wrote:

“Customer sampling of the SD-L912A is expected to take place. Notebook PCs incorporating the new drive are expected.”

I kid you not…
