Yes, this is pretty cool.
Only a year and a half after the rumours surfaced that there would be an TomTom accessory for the iPhone TomTom for iPhone is here!
TomTom for iPhone will offer a customised version of TomTom’s turn-by-turn navigation software, including IQ Routes. Sadly no mention of Live functionality, which seems like a bit of an oversight when the iPhone has mobile data access – hopefully that will appear at a later date!
Thanks to the inclusion of a GPS chip in the iPhone 3G (and 3G S) the only external gubbins now needed is a docking cradle which will hold the iPhone in both landscape and portrait orientation. The implication is that the docking cradle is a required accessory, which is a bit of a bummer, but I’d want it anyway if I was getting the software so it’s not so much of a drag. Especially as TomTom claims it offers “enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions and hands free charging and in-car charging”. Given how quickly using the GPS chip seems to eat away at my iPhone, that latter benefit of the docking station will likely be the most desirable!
TomTom for iPhone should appear on the App Store “soon,” which probably means in line with firmware 3.0 and at an unspecified price, which probably means expensive. I’m going to be veeery tempted, though.
And now, a not-all-that-informative video:
