This Week In Video No. 9

Videos, videos, videos... It could be Natasha Bedingfield's next hit song.

Windows Mobile devices have slowly but surely been improving in the finger-friendly stakes but, for some, the appeal of a proper keyboard will always remain. Cue, then, the HTC Touch Pro. With a full QWERTY keyboard, a large high resolution touchscreen, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, and GPS, this relatively compact and sleek handset has it all. Ultimately, though, we’d only recommend it if you really, really can’t do without a proper keyboard because many other handsets offer all the same features but in a much sleeker, easy to use package.

Much more impressive is Sony’s high-end Z series notebook, the VGN-Z11WN/B. A replacement for the old SZ series, it fits in-between the ultra-portable 11.1inch TZ/TT series and more conventional 15.4inch models, offering a healthy dose of performance yet remaining lightweight and highly-portable. You do have to pay for what you get but isn’t that always the way?

On the more budget end of the scale, the Kodak Zi6 is a simple, low cost, point-and-shoot camcorder. Just like the Flip video, it’s optimised to be as quick and simple to use as possible and includes built-in software that simplifies the process of getting your footage from camera to Internet. It’s real trump card over other alternatives is its HD shooting capability, which is great if you’re recording in good lighting conditions. However, in poorer light the quality deteriorates and, more to the point, HD is rather pointless if you’re just uploading to YouTube.

Finishing off this week’s video coverage, I looked at another superb quality tabletop radio. The Boston Acoustics Duo-i can tune into FM and AM broadcasts and has an iPod dock on the top for listening to your own tunes. It’s not its feature list that tells the Duo-i’s story, though, it’s the little details. As well as great sound quality, it’s very well made, and is a breeze to use. If you can cope with its lack of DAB, we really recommend it.
