This levitating turntable gives uplifting music a whole new meaning

Everyone’s playing vinyl records these days; heck even Sainsbury’s are selling them under moderately offensive retro Record Store displays in supermarkets.

So, if you want to stand out amid the 12-inch masses, the key might be a turntable fancier than your standard Audio Technica LP-120.

How about this one that just appeared on Kickstarter? The Mag-Lev Audio turntable uses magnets to levitate your records like a Led Zep fan on an acid trip.

The platter has feet which come into play when the player is in off mode. They retract to leave the platter suspended when playback begins.

It has a self-lifting tone-arm and support for 33/45rpm playback. The company has also built in a neat power-storing feature which will safely lift the tone arm and return the platter to its feet even if there’s a power cut.

The Slovenian company behind it says: “By using our innovative and parented technology we were able to achieve not only magnetic levitation, but we’ve also been able to maintain the incredibly precise turning of the platter with sensor regulating software.

“Air is the smoothest medium with least amount of friction, which further elevates this project into a truly unique listening experience.”

It’s available on Kickstarter now for the early bird special of $780. The company is seeking $300,000 over the next five weeks to put the Mag-Lev Audio into production.
