The Xbox nearly came with a ginormous controller

Some of the controller designs for the original Xbox have surfaced online, and they’re completely different to the console we know and love today.

Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley has shared some of the controller designs for the very first Xbox, some of which date back as far as 1999.

The designs clearly take inspiration from the Sega Dreamcast, and would even have used a similar VMU-style storage device for storing player data.

It appears the initial controllers had a visual resemblance to the X-Wings from Star Wars, a stark difference to the final jet-black design.

Blackley also talked about the reason behind the Xbox name, and how it was simply derived from the Graphics API Direct X.
