The Surge 2: Everything we know so far

Deck13’s The Surge was one of many titles in recent years that sought to reiterate the success of Dark Souls. The grimly futuristic action RPG took the melodic combat and freeform exploration of FromSoftware’s efforts and made it feel surprisingly fresh and unique.

An inventive equipment system and a large of variety of deadly robotic enemies made it a worthy companion to Dark Souls amongst other imitators that simply couldn’t make the cut. Now, a sequel is in the works for release in 2019. Here’s hoping lightning can strike twice!

Trusted Reviews has compiled everything you need to know about The Surge 2 including all the latest news, release date, gameplay, trailers and more.

The Surge 2 release date – when is it coming out?

The Surge 2 is currently in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC with plans to release for all three platforms in 2019. No specific release date has been announced.

The Surge 2 gameplay – any big changes?

Deck13 has already reassured fans that The Surge 2 will include everything they loved about the original. This includes the dynamic limb targeting system that can make even the most trivial of battles a fun excursion in strategy. Fodder enemies and boss encounters all have weaknesses, and your equipment can be tweaked to effectively take advantage of them.

Character progression will make a return with equal amounts of depth. Multiple sets of armour encompassing various disciplines are split into individual parts you customise. The first outing’s system was very impressive, providing an adequate amount of statistics to the brutal melee combat.

New additions include implants, weapons, gear, and drones not seen in the previous game, and we imagine they’ll be ample new environments to explore alongside them in a larger, darker world.

The Surge 2 Setting – Where does it take place?

Confirmed during the official announcement, The Surge 2 will take players to an all-new environment following the events of the first installment.

The setting itself is a sprawling, devastated city with ambitious level design made possible by the developer’s new and improved gameplay engine. It sounds like it’s leaning into the post-apocalyptic vibe which we’re totally down for.

A more diverse setting

As gorgeous as it was, The Surge found itself stuck firmly in the grey, industrial aesthetic for its entire duration. The amusement park-themed DLC alleviated this somewhat but simply couldn’t shake the dull feeling its undeniably generic setting introduced. We want The Surge 2 to shake this off with a world that feels truly unique.

The introduction of a post-apocalyptic city as the sequel’s playing field runs the risk of occupying this very same troublesome trope, so here’s hoping Deck13 have some clever surprises awaiting us.

Make your own character

The lead character in the 2017 original was painfully dull, filling all the criteria required on the one-dimensional protagonist application. We want The Surge 2 to follow in the footsteps of Dark Souls and let us discover the world for ourselves instead of working through the personal story of a frankly loathsome hero.

A world with richer lore

Dark Souls and Bloodborne are rich with fascinating characters and stories, but they’re seldom directly fed to the player. You’re expected to delve into item descriptions to understand motivations and how this world became the melancholic hellscape you occupy.
