Speaking to Trusted Reviews at a recent launch event for Dreams, Media Molecule’s Mark Healy expanded upon how the creative title aims to broaden its horizons in the coming years.
Having launched today as a PS4 exclusive, Media Molecule describes it as more of a platform than a pure gaming experience, one that it hopes to see grow and expand alongside the PlayStation platform going forward.
From the creators of Little Big Planet, Dreams provides players with a massive amount of tools to build, sculpt and curate their own creations and share them with others across a vast online community. It’s a brilliant idea, and one we hope the community takes to with ease.
“We’re concentrating on PS4 at the moment obviously, but assuming it gets traction and things like that, that’s an obvious progression probably. It’s a platform, it’s not a game and we want to support it – but when other platforms happen, we can’t just abandon the community,” Healy explained when asked about the possibility of Dreams on PS5.

However, one question is lingering on the tongues of consumers right now as the next-generation approaches, and that is the nature of backwards compatibility. It is still somewhat unclear how extensive the feature will be on PS5. Can we log into our accounts and access all of our digital games, and will physical discs work without complications?
It’s unclear, although Media Molecule shines a potentially helpful light on the situation: “We progress with technology, it’s an obvious thing. And I think the PS5 is backwards compatible anyway – to some extent.” Sony was quick to bring our focus back to Dreams, but it’s an interesting takeaway.
Even if it doesn’t come to future platforms, Dreams will continue expand with new features, mechanics and other additions to keep players invested. Support for PlayStation VR is in the works, which Media Molecule unfortunately wasn’t able to implement in time for launch.
