It’s official: the OnePlus X is dead, and it’s not coming back any time soon.
OnePlus has confirmed that last year’s OnePlus X smartphone won’t get a successor. Instead, the budget range is being retired so that the company can focus on its “true flagship” line, according to CEO Pete Lau, speaking at the launch of the OnePlus 3.
During the company’s AMA session on Reddit yesterday, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei seemed to suggest why this decision was made: “A lot of time and effort goes into developing a product. With limited resources, we need to be laser focused to even have a chance of releasing a product that can cut through the market clutter.”
The OnePlus X – the company’s third phone – was released on October 29, 2015, three months after the launch of the OnePlus 2. It was cheaper than the OnePlus 2, and shipped in three design variants: Onyx, Champagne, and Ceramic (limited edition). The OnePlus X was initially only available for purchase with an invite, but that scheme was scrapped in January this year.
The phone featured a 5-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB storage, and a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera.
