The Microsoft Surface Duo has been sneakily spotted out in the wild

An image has surfaced of the Microsoft Surface Duo on a subway train and it offers a few key insights about the device.

A YouTube video has revealed what the Microsoft Surface Duo will look like in action. Showing a commuter getting to grips with the device on a packed commuter train with apps such as emails and mobile games, the video demonstrates the utility of being able to use two different screens at once for efficient multi-tasking or simply holding the device vertically to read a longer article. Some prospective user might be put off by the chunky bezels, which seem a bit old-fashioned given recent smartphone design trends.

So far we still know relatively little about the specs of the Microsoft Surface Duo. What we do know is that it will run the Android mobile operating system rather than any attempt to revive Microsoft’s ill-fated Windows Phone OS. We also expect it to arrive in December 2020, so there’s still plenty of time for more leaks and rumours to arrive, giving us a better idea of what to expect from Microsoft’s return to mobiles.

Foldables are quite the industry trend at the moment, but the Microsoft Surface Duo looks unusual for the fact that it consists of two separate screens rather than a single display under folding glass or plastic. The current smartphone it bears closest resemblance to is the LG V50 with the dual-screen accessory attached, an arrangement which we found to be a somewhat awkward and clunky to use – so let’s hope that Microsoft can pull it off better.

Other recent entries in the foldables market include the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X, and the Motorola Razr – while we expect a new example, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, to make its debut on February 11. Microsoft will certainly be up against stiff competition when the Surface Duo launches later this year.
