HBO’s The Last of Us TV Series – Ties to The Last of Us 2 and pilot episode update

HBO’s The Last of Us – Everything you need to know: Want to know the latest updates regarding HBO’s TV adaptation of The Last of Us? All of the newest information is right here for your perusal.

Earlier this year, HBO sent shockwaves throughout the entertainment and video game industries, announcing its plans to adapt The Last of Us into a TV series. This is the first time that a major production company has planned to adapt a video game franchise (Netflix’s The Witcher goes off the books so it doesn’t count), and could be a huge turning point for adaptations if its ends up being successful.

Of course, being so early in development – and with that development having been halted due to the on-going Coronavirus pandemic – there’s only a few morsels of information out there to dwell over, be we’ve managed to round them up here for you enjoyment (and our collective speculation).

HBO’s The Last of Us – Latest News and updates

After several months of no updates (completely understandable during a global pandemic), we finally have a new tidbit of information: the chosen director of The Last of Us’ season premier.

The pilot episode of the series will be directed by Johan Renck, who’s credits include every episode of Chernobyl, alongside several episodes of Breaking Bad, just to name a few.

Who will play Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us TV Series?

This is the big one – before any discussions can take place regarding the plot, every fan out there wants to know which actors are being hired to portray the now iconic post-apocalyptic duo of Joel and Ellie.

With development on the series still being in the pre-production stage, there’s no official word yet on who will play Joel or Ellie. Far be it from a small hiccup like that however to stop the internet from speculating The Last of Us casting ad nauseam.

For aged gruff Joel, several names have been chucked into the ballot, ranging from industry veteran Hugh Jackman to new fan favourites like Jon Bernthal and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Personally, I would love to see Oscar Isaac step into the role – anything that man does is golden.

Speculation is just as fierce in relation to who should play Ellie, but two of the main frontrunners appear to be It-series alum Sophia Lillis, and Kaitlyn Dever of the critically acclaimed indie-flick Booksmart. Whichever cast HBO decides to eventually go with, you can be sure that the internet will still have something say about it.

HBO’s The Last of Us Release Date – When will the show come out?

Sorry folks, if there’s one thing that’s even more far-fetched than the casting right now, it’s a solid release date. HBO has yet to officially announce a release date for The Last of Us TV show, but the complications surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic mean that production and filming is only now starting to open up again, and so a series debut is an unlikely thing to happen until roughly 2022.

With the show still being in the early stages of pre-production, no official date on the release date for HBO’s The Last of Us has been set, but given the average production time for a television series these days, we can estimate a release date sometime in 2022.

How can I watch HBO’s The Last of Us in the UK?

Given Sky’s distribution relationship with HBO, it’s almost a given that The Last of Us will be available to watch on Sky Atlantic.

If you don’t have access to Sky’s TV package (and live in the 21st century), chances are you’ll be able to stream The Last of Us via Now TV. The same was recently true for HBO’s latest breakout series, Watchmen.

HBO’s The Last of Us Story – Is there a connection to The Last of Us 2?

In the press release announcing HBO’s The Last of Us, we happened to spot this juicy piece of information: “The HBO series will cover the events of the original game, which was written by Druckmann, with the possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel.”

This glimpse into the future seems to indicate that if The Last of Us proves to be a big hit for HBO, then a second season will more than likely follow the events of The Last of Us II, which we recently bestowed with a perfect 5/5 rating here at Trusted Reviews.
