Sony has reportedly reached a ‘tentative agreement’ to make The Interview available to rent through Google’s YouTube and Play Store platforms.

Multiple reports on Thursday claim the firm plans to offer the movie digitally on Christmas Day, so coincide with the release at 300 independent cinemas across the United States.

The firm is also planning to offer the film through its own portals and other digital platforms beyond Google’s, reports have claimed.

According to CNN Money the Google deal is yet to be finalised, with sources claiming “the deal could still fall apart.

If completed, the accord will allow curious moviegoers to enjoy The Interview from the comfort of their own living rooms over the Christmas period.

These latest reports come hours after we reported Sony had failed in a bid to stare iTunes as a partner, but a later arrival on Apple’s platform is still possible at a later date according to CNN.

What was (and still is) a nightmare scenario for Sony following the hacking crisis, is now set to turn into a huge money spinner for the under-fire firm.

Sony had initially pulled the movies release indefinitely after the major US cinema chains pulled it from schedules citing threats of violence from the hacking groups upset with the movie’s controversial, international incident-sparking, content.

Given The Interview’s status as the most talked about film of the year, it’s likely to see a flood of downloads from moviegoers more concerned with ‘standing up for freedom’ than the critical panning the movie has received so far.

Talk about turning lemons into lemonade with the greatest unintentional or was it?) PR campaign of all time.
