The Galaxy S8 could feature the ultimate front ‘selfie’ camera

Samsung has consistently improved on its flagship smartphone design in previous years, offering performance and design upgrades that keep the Galaxy S-series at the top of the smartphone ranks.

But the front-facing camera is one element that has remained relatively untouched over the past few years, with small bumps in megapixels being the only improvements introduced.

Well, that could change on the upcoming Galaxy S8 if a new report from Korea’s ETNews is anything to go by.

According to the report, which seems to cite an industry source, Samsung will be adding Autofocus to the S8’s front-facing camera.

Autofocus on front-facing cameras is somewhat rare, though OnePlus has turned its attention to the front-facing shooter with its latest OnePlus 3T handset, which features a 16-megapixel front camera.

Whether we’ll see an increased resolution on the Galaxy S8’s offering remains to be seen, as the report doesn’t mention any resolution bump.

It’s also yet to be confirmed that Samsung is indeed planning to add Autofocus to the S8’s selfie shooter, as the company hasn’t revealed any major details about the phone.

Still, that hasn’t stopped the rumours from circulating, with a Snapdragon 835 chip, 6GB RAM, and a new, almost full-face screen design among the mooted features.

There’s also expected to be a new AI assistant, following Samsung’s acquisition of AI developers Viv Labs, and the subsequent filing of patents for a new voice-activated assistant called ‘Bixby’.

The phone itself is expected to launch at MWC 2017, which takes place in February. But following the Note 7 debacle, which forced Samsung to recall its phablet due to overheating issues, the launch of the S8 could be pushed back to ensure the same mistake isn’t repeated.

We’re sure more information will be forthcoming very soon so stay tuned for the latest.
