The Final Fantasy 7 Remake opening cinematic is here, and it’s beautiful
Square Enix has released the opening cinematic for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and it recreates the classic JRPG’s first moments in fabulous style.
Planned to launch exclusively for PS4 on April 10, 2020, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been literally years in the making, and it’s so close we can almost taste it. Yes, we’re a tiny bit excited for this one.
The opening cinematic, which clocks in at roughly 5 minutes, recreates the original game’s opening moments with stunning accuracy, albeit with a few extra bells and whistles to ensure it feels firmly at home in the modern age.

For starters, the opening seconds are completely different. A bird begins soaring through a beautiful natural sky before descending into the depths of Midgar. Engulfed by buildings, fog and pollution we soon drop to the streets, following three children as they cycle across a bunch of familiar landmarks.
After this, it shifts to night and we finally encounter Aerith, leaning on the ground as she picks up a single solitary flower growing amidst the concrete jungle. It’s beautiful and true to its roots, while expanding it in a way that gives the world and characters more depth.
Seeing so many iconic vistas recreated with modern visuals is genuinely breaktaking, even if the remastered music removes some of the original’s beloved subtlety. It’s all bombasse from here on out, which we hope bodes well in the final release.
“A few short years ago a Final Fantasy 7 Remake felt like a distant pipedream, but now I’ve had it in my hands, I can’t wait for more – and it’s less than a year away. I try not to fall victim to nostalgia, but I feel Final Fantasy 7 Remake is pursuing far more than that,” reads my hands-on preview.
This will be the first chapter in a project that will span multiple episodes, with work having already started on the second. Chances are it will come to PS5 and Xbox Series X once all is said and done. But for now, exclusive rights belong to Sony.
