Tesla’s Model X SUV finally gets a release date

Tesla has finally revealed when we’ll see the long-awaited Model X SUV.

The company announced that the much-delayed vehicle will launch in September.

“As we prepare to launch Model X in September, we are building more validation vehicles, executing final engineering and testing work, enabling our new manufacturing equipment and finalising arrangements with our suppliers,” explains Tesla.

The Model X is Tesla’s very first SUV model, which the company claims will be the first electric vehicle that can tow.

It was first announced way back in 2012, and was originally pegged to ship in 2014.

Tesla kicked off pre-orders in 2013, accepting $5,000 deposits, but then revealed the car would actually ship in early 2015.

However, early 2015 came and went and now, finally, we have what looks to be a definitive release window.

Apparently, the delays are down to the complexity of building Model X units.

Speaking in yesterday’s earnings call, Tesla boss Elon Musk described the Model X as the most challenging car in the world to build.

The company says it’s targeting combined deliveries of between 50,000 and 55,000 Model S and Model X cars in 2015.
