Tesco launches Clubcard TV, Netflix and LoveFilm rival

Tesco has launched its own internet film and TV streaming service for Tesco Clubcard customers, Clubcard TV.

Available to all Tesco Clubcard holders, the Clubcard TV service is subscription free and users will not suffer pay-per-view charges. Anyone without a Tesco Clubcard can apply for one via the Tesco website, also free of charge.

“We have thousands of movies and TV shows for you to choose from – all you need to enjoy them is a Clubcard, a computer and a broadband connection,” said Tesco.  “With no schedules, no fees and no fuss, Clubcard TV offers you access to a world of drama, action, kids’ TV, comedy, documentary – and our catalogue of movies and programmes is constantly evolving, providing you with quality family entertainment.”

A potential rival for internet streaming specialists Netflix and LoveFilm, Clubcard TV is a joint offering from Tesco and Blinkbox, a movie-streaming service Tesco has owned 80 per cent of since 2011.

Blinkbox has been voted the UK’s best movie streaming service by the Gadget Show for 2012, and offers online movie streaming without monthly subscription charges, instead purchasing TV series and movies on a pay-per-view basis.

Currently in software development beta stages, the Clubcard TV service is only available to Tesco employees at the moment, with the service due to launch to all customers in spring.

Tesco will be the first retailer to launch its own online streaming service and Tesco claims it is meant to be a “thank you” to their loyal customers.

Already featured among Clubcard TV titles are Batman and Superman movies and BBC dramas Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Goodness Gracious Me.
