TDS Gets Rugged New PDA Rival

This town is plenty big enough for the both of us.

One of the most fun reviews I’ve ever done was the TDS Recon. To test this super rugged PDA many of the usual lab tests went out the window and I spent a day simply dropping it, leaving it underwater and being generally abusive. Well those times could be back after Varlink announced it is going to exclusively ship Aceeca’s competing unit, the Meazura, to the UK.

Like the TDS Recon, the Meazura is a tough-as-they-come PDA which has also passed military IP67 standards for waterproofing, temperature and dust resistance. It is coated in a similarly heavy duty rubberised outer casing to protect against impacts but sports a Palm, rather than Windows, OS.

Inside the Meazura is driven by a 33MHz Motorola DragonBall-VZ microprocessor, runs on 16MB of SDRAM and has 4MB of flash. Just 2MB of this is available to the user but a MZIO slot supports expansion using multiple flash memory formats. A 4bit greyscale interface with a 160 x 160 resolution is hardly cutting edge, but these priorities focus on reliability and practicality not front and beauty.

A 1900mAh battery is fitted as standard and power consumption is just 21mA with the system idling and the backlight on, raising to 180mA during intensive use. Two variations of the Meazura are available: the IDV-BCS1 featuring a built in scanner module with CCD image sensor and optical scanning rate of 250 scans per second x two cycles and a real time decoding rate of 500 scans per second at a 5mil resolution. The IDV-BCS2 has a visible Laser Diode light source and reads barcodes at a minimum speed of 52 scan lines per second.

Being a B2B distributor Varlink discusses prices for the Meazura range on an individual basis, but supplies are available now and they can be contacted via the links below.

Update: We´re managed to get hold of the Meazura´s guide price which is an impressively low low £543.00. Reseller launch prices can reduce this further and discounts are available for bulk orders. This heavily undercuts the TDS Recon, interesting non?
