The Tapwave Zodiac finally hits UK shores today in an exclusive deal with Dixons and PC World.
The Tapwave Zodiac, which we reviewed last month, is available to buy from today on UK high streets. The innovative handheld gaming device is available exclusively through PC World and Dixons and from www.pcworld.co.uk. However, as of writing, the Zodiac hadn’t as yet appeared on the site. The device is priced at £269.99 for the 32MB version and £329.99 for the 128MB unit.
The Zodiac is the first PalmOS based gaming handheld device and is powered by a 200MHz Motorola i.MX1 ARM9 processor, and ATI Imageon graphics. It also sports a 480 x 320 resolution screen, stereo audio, vibration effects and Bluetooth. Other features include the first pressure sensitive analogue joystick to feature on a portable gaming device, and two SD card expansion slots.
Though it certainly impressed us with its high specifications and performance, ultimately a gaming device is only as good as its games. Zodiac says it will be revealing its release schedule over the next month, and we hope that it contains some suitably impressive titles.
That said, one of the most attractive features of the Zodiac is that its relatively high specifications means it’s able to comfortably handle emulators, enabling users to play classic games from old computers. A site dedicated to emulators for the Zodiac can be found here.
The official release titles include Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, Midway’s SpyHunter, id Software’s DOOM II and 3D Realms MachineWorks Northwest’s Duke Nukem Mobile. These games will be available in DVD style packaging and will retail for £29.99.
Two game packs will also be available – Z Pak: Adventure, which will include Galactic Realms and Legacy; and the Z Pak: Fun featuring Paintball, MegaBowling and Kickoo’s Breakout.
