T-Mobile Launches G1 / Android OS Emulator

Get to have a play around...

Excited by Android but not the bulky T-Mobile G1 / HTC Dream handset that it is currently restricted to? Then you’re in tune with the general consensus of press opinion and you’ll be excited by this…

T-Mobile has launched a G1 emulator website which – while promoting the hardware too – gives users a pretty good experience of Google’s open source OS. With the mouse pointer representing a finger, curious users will be able to click around the virtual Android platform and get a feel for its layout and main functionality.

There are some omissions which in truth are fairly obvious, such as the camera, GPS and browser (scandalous URLs would probably run amok) but it does illustrate what I managed to attain from my hands-on impressions earlier this month: it’s basic but filled with potential.

For those who missed that report (go read it!) note that Android’s absence of desktop synchronisation software and even a comprehensive multimedia player is not an accident, Google expects third parties to come up with that stuff.

Of course it is unlikely that we will see the best of Android until these third parties get to work on it and, indeed, until Google offers a few tweaks of its own. But if you’re a potential G1 owner you can’t afford to ignore this…
