Surprise! Sony is behind this nifty e-paper FES Watch

Sony is developing a wrist watch using electronic paper which changes appearance based on user gestures, it was revealed on Friday.

The Wall Street Journal reports the company is behind the FES Watch, which has caused a stir on crowdfunding sites in Japan in recent weeks.

The very minimalist and stylish FES Watch, which is available to pre-order ahead of a May 2015 release, utilises the e-paper to change its appearance depending on the user’s gesture.

In the promotional video, for example, it appears as a plain black wristband until the wearer lifts his wrist to check the time. Then the screen and the strap comes to life.

The FES Watch has 24 design variances in total, which can be accessed through various taps and prods.

Sony reportedly hid its name from the project, perhaps to tempter expectations, with the FES Watch made by a company that goes under the name of Fashion Entertainments.

“We hid Sony’s name because we wanted to test the real value of the product, whether there will be demand for our concept,” once inside source said.

However, the WSJ reports, Sony’s experiments are not limited to consumer tech. According to the article the firm is also working on e-ink bow ties, hat accesses and paper holders as Sony looks to “redefine e-paper as a fabric.”
