Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be released on 5 December in the UK and Europe, just in time for Christmas.
Those in the US will be able to get hold of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U from 21 November. As usual, us folk in the UK are slightly behind.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is going to be among the first games to be compatible with the new Amiibo platform.
Amiibo is a Skylanders-like, NFC-based system that uses figurines that talk to your Wii U gamepad. Its first figures will go on sale on 28 November.
Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Kirby, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager, Pikachu and Marth will make up the first wave of Amiibo characters.
Not seen your Nintendo fave there? Zelda, Diddy Kong, Luigi, Little Mac, Pit and Captain Falcon will join the Amiibo gang on 19 December.
Alongside the 5 December release date, Nintendo also announced a couple of Super Smash Bros. bundles: one for the younger casual buyer, and another for those who remember the game from previous generations.
The bundle aimed more at the new crowd comes with a Mario Amiibo figure. This figure will let you switch data between the Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.
NFC is only built into the new, upcoming version of the 3DS, though, so you’ll need an NFC adapter to use the Amiibo with your handheld.
For the, most likely, older gamer, the second bundle comes with a GameCube controller adapter. Super Smash Bros. Wii U offers full support for the good old GameCube gamepad, offering the classic feel you just wouldn’t get with the standard Wii U pad.
Nintendo is even going as far as to release a new signature edition of the GameCube pad alongside the game – which may be an apology to the hardcore fans who have been waiting since 2011 for this game. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was announced all the way back in E3 2011.
While the Wii U is now seen as a relative flop next to the PS4 and Xbox One, this release could help drive some last-minute Q4 2014 sales of the console – the 3DS version has already sold 2.8 million copies.
