Sunset Overdrive multiplayer “was always going to be distinct”

Insomniac Games confirms there were never plans to integrate multiplayer into the Sunset Overdrive single player campaign.

If you were considering the possibility Insomniac played with a Destiny style seamless multiplayer for Sunset Overdrive, you’d be wrong.

The Xbox One exclusive features a rather manic 8-player co-operative multiplayer called Chaos squad that is separate from the main single player storyline.

“[Multiplayer] was always going to be its own thing. Just because we knew with the single player campaign we could design something that would work really well for one player and then we could design something that would work really well for eight players,” said James Stevenson, Head of Community at Insomniac Games.

“So they were always going to be a distinct thing, but it is very easy and seamless to go from one to the other. You just find a photo booth in the city and it takes you onto the dedicated server where the online game lives.”

What’s great about Sunset Overdrive is that your single player and multiplayer characters are one and the same. So, the character you spent ages creating and personalising for the main game travels over to the multiplayer and can pick up special amps, weapons and clothing to don in the main game.

“I’m really excited to see what people do when they play it. It’s a great way to show your character off to your friends and then you can earn new stuff that you can only get in Chaos Squad and bring it right back to your single player game.

The Sunset Overdrive release date is scheduled for October 31 in the UK and will arrive on the market complete with a White Xbox One hardware bundle retailing for £349.99.
