The late Steve Jobs was pondering the prospect of an Apple Car in the years leading up to his death, according to iPod godfather Tony Fadell.
Fadell, who founded the Alphabet-owned Nest Labs, said Jobs was speaking about what form an Apple car would take as far back as 2008.
With Apple currently rumoured to be building both electric and self-driving cars with an eye on launching in 2019, Fadell told Bloomberg TV the shift was already being visualised in the Jobs era.
He said: “Yes, we did [talk about cars]. We had a couple walks. And this was in 2008.”

While Jobs’ thought process wasn’t fleshed out during his lifetime, Apple appears to be driving the idea forward under Tim Cook.
The firm has poached several high-profile employees from Elon Musk’s Tesla, as well as senior research & development figures from across the industry.

Early this year, Apple executive Jeff Williams coyly called the car “the ultimate mobile device,” but the company is yet to make any official statement on the matter.
