Starbucks Rewards members will soon get access to the New York Times’ top stories of the day, as part of a new agreement between the two companies.
The free access to the daily ’morning briefing’ as well as a host of additional content “addressing key social political and economic issues” will be delivered directly to the Starbucks app.
Starbucks customers in the US already receive free in-store access to the NYT’s top 15 articles of the day, but the new partnership will offer content any time and anywhere through the app.
The new feature will be added in early 2016, but the bigger picture appears to be Starbucks’ desire to turn its mobile app into a fully fledged news reader.
This suggests Starbucks could be looking to create a Flipboard or Pulse-like reader for folks to enjoy alongside their coffee.
News curation appears to becoming a hotly-contested sector with Apple News coming in iOS 9 and Facebook’s Instant Articles. The latter is a partnership that sees content providers post articles directly to the social network.
As an aside, Starbucks deal with the NYT also offers the chance for Rewards Members to earn stars by taking out print and digital subscriptions. In May, Starbucks and Spotify announced a similar deal.
