Star Wars Battlefront won’t have any microtransactions

There will be no microtransactions in Star Wars Battlefront, DICE has confirmed

A senior developer at Star Wars Battlefront developer DICE has crushed rumours and speculation that the upcoming title would support microtransactions.

Instead, Battlefront will support a type of in-game currency that will be earned as you complete matches.

Battlefront will utilise a two-tier currency system of points and credits. Credits can be used to rent exotic and dangerous weapons and equipment.

In the past, two-tier currency systems were often used to incorporate microtransactions, allowing players to convert real world money into currency to be spent in-game.

Thankfully this isn’t the case, and DICE is happy to make that very clear.

Speaking to Gamespot, Battlefront design director Niklas Fegraeus spoke about microtransactions, stating they are “not part of the core design” of Battlefront.

The interview expands upon the currency system and the importance of player performance when earning credits.

“The currency system is based on your game performance. The credits that you use to buy things in the game are earned. You play the game, complete challenges, and that’s how you get credits.”

“There are several [credit] systems working together here. Just doing things in the game earns you points, and those [points] earn you credits. That’s the baseline system; the more you do, the more credits you get,” he said.

“But then there are other systems, such as small challenges for you to complete, and rewards for different actions.”

“If you’re really competitive, the coolest things you can get is star cards to best suit your play style. If you really like to snipe, for example, you should totally go for the blaster cannon”

“You can buy some expensive in-game items, such as being able to play as an alien race. You can be a Rodian while everyone else is human.”

It’s a relief that microtransactions won’t be worming their way into Battlefront like they have in past EA titles.

The beta for Star Wars Battlefront begins on October 8 and will run until October 12.

Star Wars Battlefront is set to release on November 19 in the UK for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
