Star Trek Into Darkness gets a 9-min IMAX 3D preview in front of The Hobbit

Star Trek Into Darkness, JJ Abrams’ upcoming sequel to his successful 2009 Trek movie reboot, is to have its first nine minutes shown in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in hundreds of IMAX cinemas.

There hasn’t even been a proper trailer released for the new Star Trek film, so the announcement of the extended preview will come as a surprise bonus for fans, especially any who have already booked early seats to see The Hobbit at an IMAX screen. A press release from Paramount Pictures’ HQ in the US confirmed the exclusive preview is lined-up for 500 IMAX cinemas in America, though you can probably assume that it will extend to IMAX cinemas in other countries too.

Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit premieres on 14 December. Extended “first looks” have been used before – including at IMAX venues – notably for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and its 2012 follow-up The Dark Knight Rises. However, Star Trek’s big-screen sneak peek will be the first such preview reel to be shown in IMAX 3D. Key sequences of the film, such as the opening, were shot with high-resolution IMAX cameras. The film is due for release in cinemas on 17 May 2013.

Star Trek Into Darkness will also join the growing number of films to use the new Dolby Atmos surround sound technology, which adds many more audio channels for cinemas to use.

Star Trek 2009

Star Trek Into Darkness once again features Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the Kirk and Spock roles respectively. Benedict Cumberbatch appears as the baddie of the piece and also has a part in the new Hobbit trilogy.
