Sphero says Star Wars BB-8 droid will pioneer sci-fi toy revolution

The tech company behind the already-beloved BB-8 droid from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has promised its forthcoming consumer version will kick-start a revolution in the toy industry.
Sphero, who has teamed up with Disney and Lucasfilm to bring the real-life, non-CGI droid to life, says the BB-8 toy will be ‘authentic in every way to the entertainment on-screen.’
In an email update to those who’ve registered interest in owning a fully functional replica of the charming rolling droid will offer an experience only seen in science fiction until now.
The company wrote: “We know that our current fans, as well as our new Star Wars fans, will be expecting an extraordinary BB-8 experience. We are confident we can deliver that experience.
“This is the beginning of a revolution in the toy industry.
“Just think, people will be able to own a piece of the movie. They’ll have it in their homes, and will be able to relive an experience that is authentic in every way to the entertainment on-screen. It’s an exciting time, and we are thrilled you have chosen to be a part of this journey.”

The company still isn’t giving away specifics about the working BB-8 replica, such as price or release date, but is advising fanciers to stay tuned to the GoSphero Star Wars page.
