Speedo has teamed up with Misfit to dip its toes into the world of activity tracking. Say hello to the new Speedo Shine.
Joining the Shine, the budget Flash and the recently announced Flash Link, Misfit’s new addition to its activity-tracking family is for swimmers.
With its sleek, minimalist aluminium disc design, the Speedo Shine looks similar to the original Shine – but it offers enhanced swimming-focused features so you can closely track your pool sessions. That’s apparently down to new “proprietary lap-counting algorithms” built into the firmware.
Speedo has carried out its own in-pool testing with the Shine to ensure tracking is accurate, and it should work with all swimming strokes.

Syncing data to the Misfit iOS and Android apps, you’ll be able to view information on swim distance, calories burned and it will also utilise the same points-scoring system as Misfit’s other trackers. Third-party app support is on the way, so you’ll soon be able to store data in Speedo Fit – the swimming brand’s own personalised smartphone application.
Although it is possible to take the original Shine and Flash for a dip, it doesn’t offer much in the way of analysis; you can only monitor swim duration and intensity.
The Speedo Shine is waterproof to a depth of 50 metres, which is the same as the original Shine. And it even offers tracking outside of the pool – for walking, running, cycling and automatic sleep monitoring too.
The tracker is secured in a rubber watch strap, available in either black or white – again, more like the original Shine than the rigid plastic band of the Flash. This is a little concerning, however; in our experience, the tracker fell out of the band far too easily. Misfit will hopefully remedy this issue with a new Action clip that aims to offer a more secure fit.
There’s no need to charge the Speedo Shine daily; a coin-cell battery provides six months of battery life. Plus that signature 12-light LED panel is also present, with a simple tap letting you switch between a progress view and the time.
The Speedo Shine will be available in a new “Pure” light-silver colour and will go on sale in Apple Stores globally from the 1 September. It will be priced at £59.99, making it cheaper than the Shine (£100), but more expensive than the Flash (£50) and the Flash Link (£20).
The tracker will also be available through Misfit.com and SpeedoUSA.com.
