Source 2 Engine Explains Half-Life 2 Episode 3 Delays?

Are you one of the gamers who has all but given up in despair that we’ll ever see a Half-Life 2: Episode 3? The (very) long-awaited sequel to the famous Half-Life 2: Episode 2, and the concluding part of the Episodes trilogy, is proving almost as elusive as Duke Nukem Forever (may the Source forgive me for the comparison).

However, there might yet be the light of an active gravity gun at the end of the tunnel. Apparently there are many references to a ‘Source 2’ discovered in code for the Source Filmmaker script by One example is line 1387, which has the following:

”’Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn’t doesn’t exist, assume ‘Source’, otherwise invalid — assume next-gen ‘Source 2′.”’

While there’s no mention of Episode 3, it seems a likely assumption that Valve has been making it using the new and improved Source 2 engine. And to be honest, a game that looks every bit as good as the latest CryEngine and Unreal 3 is a pretty cool recompense for the years of waiting.

What about you – have you given up on Half-Life 2: Episode 3, or are you awaiting Valve’s last entrant to the series with as much anticipation as ever? Let us know in the comments.
