Bandai Namco has confirmed that Soulcalibur 6 will see the return of familiar fighters alongside the debut of new ones.

Launching 2018 on PS4, Xbox One and PC
With fighting games in a pretty good place these days, there’s never been a better time for a new SoulCalibur. A beloved series, but one that fell on some hard times in latter entries. Some fundamental changes to the core mechanics meant that SoulCalibur 5 wasn’t as well received as some of the earlier titles, specifically its debut and sequel.
It’s clear from only a few hours with SoulCalibur 6 that it’s an evolution of the systems found in the first two games. Eight-way run is back, so there’s a greater emphasis on movement. Guard impacts (essentially parry) are no longer tied to a super meter and therefore can be done at any point, giving every character an extremely useful defensive option.
Of course, the ability to cancel any normal attack by hitting the block button is also back, so baiting out an opponent’s guard impact with a nice little fake-out, before hitting a huge punishing series of blows is key. The super meter is now used for fantastic looking ‘Critical Edge’ attacks, as well as a timed transformation which buffs your chosen character’s attacks.
The Reversal Edge is the biggest new addition. Very similar to the Focus Attack in Street Fighter IV, upon activation it will absorb a few hits before delivering a blow that triggers a sequence where players hit a button – kick, dodge, attack etc – and then see how it plays out. Clearly designed for two main reasons, the first giving beginners an easy, one button and fairly reliable way out of pressure, and the second being that it looks great, the little sequence that plays out showcases slow motion dodges or huge, flashy attacks. It’s a nice addition.

The game is fast, smooth and even at this relatively early stage looks fantastic. It may be too early to say, but SoulCalibur 6 appears to be a return to form, which is not something to be sniffed at. The first ‘calibur sits deservedly in the top five all-time highest scoring games on Metacritic. A good SoulCalibur game is a very good game indeed.
We had the chance to try out the four recently announced characters. Xianghua, Killik and Nightmare all make a welcome return alongside newcomer Grøh, who wields a Darth Maul-esque double saber, that can be split into two blades during combos. He’s flashy to use, has some really nasty low attacks that hit multiple times and can really control the arena when pressuring a grounded opponent, and when in Critical Edge gains some slight teleportation to his attacks, making him hard to predict. He’s the first announced new character and fits in perfectly.
Xianghua is superbly animated, as she fights with a Chinese sword dance style, and when you chain together her attacks she’s deadly. Still able to dash in and out of range with certain attacks, players who have used her in previous games are going to feel right at home. Same goes for Killik, who still dishes out ranged punishment with a huge pole, able to hit damaging overhead strikes from much further than you think! He, however, has a considerable transformation in Critical Edge, where he changes appearance, taking on a demonic look and does significantly more damage, as well as even chipping away at the opponent’s health when they’re guarding. Standard in other fighting games, but not the case in SoulCalibur and it is a frightening tool. However, his health depletes whilst like this, so there’s some real risk reward – it appears to turn him into a glass cannon.

Then there’s Nightmare, who in Unreal Engine 4 looks absolutely stunning. The corrupted Siegfried still uses the Soul Edge, the giant blade with the eye, covered in glowing armour and a giant claw that can also be used as a weapon. He can dash forwards after certain attacks to keep up the pressure, and his Critical Edge is the most impressive so far, as he summons a demonic horse to flatten his opponent.
With two more characters announced this week – Ivy and Zasalamel – and with twenty slots on the character select screen in the version we got to see, it’s looking like SoulCalibur 6 is going to have a healthy, varied line-up at release. We can’t wait to see who shows up next.
