Sony’s next flagship set to boast five camera sensors – here’s the rundown

A new leak has revealed the full camera set-up that’s expected for Sony’s next flagship smartphone. Here are the details for all five and what they do.

The leaks, from Japanese source AndroidNext, concern Sony’s next top-of-the-line device, variously known as the Sony Xperia 5 Plus or the Sony Xperia 1.1 (the name has not yet been officially confirmed). Pictures show that the device’s camera set-up will include the following:

  • 12-megapixel f/1.5 main wide angle camera
  • 64-megapixel f/1.7 telephoto sensor
  • 2-megapixel Time-of-Flight sensor
  • Periscope lens
  • 12-megapixel f/3.4 ultrawide lens

We expect to see the new device unveiled at MWC 2020, which is taking place in late February in Barcelona and is the usual spot for Sony to unveil its latest devices.

Aside from the impressive camera we also expect the device to pack the latest Snapdragon 865 processor, along with 5G connectivity – a first for Sony. Last year’s Sony Xperia 1 was particularly noteworthy for its 6.5-inch 4K OLED screen with HDR support, and we’d like to see the new handset matching or exceeding the high bar set by its predecessor. Increased battery life and improved camera performance are also on our wishlist for the upcoming flagship.

While this reported camera arrangement certainly looks to guarantee a great deal of versatility, how will it compare against the very best in the business? Our current camera champion is the iPhone 11 Pro, which offers brilliant all-round performance thanks to its triple-camera set-up.

Each of the cameras captures breathtaking images under almost any circumstances, while the video recording capability is easily the best ever found on a smartphone. Meanwhile, though the Xperia 1 boasted the best camera yet found on a Sony phone and was a marked improvement over the brand’s recent efforts, it still lagged behind the top of the field.
