Sony Xperia Z Ultra lands as 6.4-inch Galaxy Note 3 rival

Sony has launched a new Sony Xperia Z spinoff with the gargantuan Sony Xperia Z Ultra landing with a 6.4-inch display.

Further blurring the lines between the smartphone and tablet markets, the stylus compatible Sony Xperia Z Ultra is shaping up to be a rival to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a device that has been tipped for an IFA 2013 unveiling and which will replace the existing Note 2.

The world’s latest Full HD smartphone, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra packs a 1080p 6.4-inch display within a 6.5mm thick body, a shell which also sees the handset boast the accolade of the ‘world’s slimmest Full HD smartphone’.

“The Xperia Z Ultra is the most exciting revolution in large-screen smartphone entertainment devices with both the slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display in the world that is second to none.” Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications claimed. “We’re already bringing the best of Sony technology and design across a range of premium smartphones and tablets, and now we are bringing this same premium offering to the large-screen smartphone segment, setting a new standard for others to follow.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Features
More than an oversized gimmick, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra pairs its 6.4-inch 1080p triluminos display with a speedy 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that sees the handset edge past the 1.9GHz quad-core offering on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

With the handset’s plus sized body allowing a monstrous battery to be added, the Xperia Z Ultra benefits from a 3000mAh Lithium-Ion battery. Google’s Android Jelly Bean OS also features.

Despite making a considerable jump in size over the 5-inch Sony Xperia Z, the 6.5mm thick, 212g in weight Z Ultra benefits from the same waterproof capabilities of its predecessor.

Although the phablet device does not ship with its own integrated stylus, the Sony Xperia Z is reportedly compatible with any capacitive stylus or metal pen. It has an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera with an Exmor RS for mobile sensor and a second, 2-megapixel snapper up front.

IP58 and IP55 protected, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which features 4G LTE connectivity options and NFC, is set to land in a trio of colours with black, white and purple options to be made available

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Release Date and Price
While the handset has been officially unveiled, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra release date is yet to be narrowed down beyond “Q3 2013.” What’s more a Sony Xperia Z Ultra price is still up in the air.
