Although the Sony Xperia XZ2 was only released in April of this year, there are already rumours circulating that we might be about to see a follow-up, the Sony Xperia XZ3, and it could be revealed as early as IFA 2018 at an event that we know Sony is holding.
Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any consistent information about what we should expect the new handset to be running, with each leak carrying a separate set of specs and hardware. We’ll hopefully know more after the Sony event, which is due to take place just before IFA at 12pm BST on August 30.
At this point its unclear whether all the leaks are even referring to the same piece of hardware. Either there could be multiple different versions of the XZ3 inbound, or else we could be looking at different devices entirely.
Sony Xperia XZ3 Specs
The first glimpse we got of an upcoming Sony handset was a benchmark listing for a mysterious H8616 device that cropped up on Geekbench’s online database. The data suggested that the unit will be armed with a Snapdragon 845 CPU, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
Then back in June a User Agent Profile surfaced.
What’s strange is the information Geekbench recorded doesn’t match up to that of the User Agent Profile, with the former stating that the Xperia XZ3 has a screen resolution of 2800 x 1440 pixels, and the latter a denser 3840 x 1920 pixels.
Further complicating matters was a leak from MobileFun, which showed off what was alleged to be the 64GB version of the device that would retail for £749.99. This listing included a third potential display resolution of 2160 x 1080 along with a Snapdragon 845 CPU and 6GB of RAM — a figure that has recently been backed up by the emergence of three more model names with the same resolution.
One thing all these leaks can agree on, however, is that the phone is unlikely to come sporting a display notch like many of the other flagship handsets released in 2018.

Sony Xperia XZ3 Camera
There’s also been a lot of debate around what rear camera setup the phone will use. The Mobile Fun leak above claims that the phone will have a dual camera setup consisting of a 19MP and a 12MP sensor.
While it doesn’t confirm the megapixels, another leak from Olixar showed off a trio of cases that seemed to back up this dual camera configuration.
But another benchmark leak from July suggested that the handset will instead sport a single sensor on its rear. Before you write off the handset’s potential as a camera phone, however, the leak also suggested that the sensor would include a massive 47MP of detail, which is massive for a phone.
This suggests the phone may pack Sony’s recently announced IMX586 sensor.
Obviously megapixels aren’t the be all and end all for photo quality, but having this many hopefully suggests that Sony has invested some serious money in the camera capabilities of the phone.
For now we’re going to work under the assumption that all of these rumours are pointing towards the XZ3, but equally they could be referring to another device from Sony based off the XZ2, such as the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium that was released earlier this year in the US.
