Sony Xperia handsets to get DualShock 3 controller support

Sony will shortly be introducing native support for the DualShock 3 controller for the PlayStation 3 to its Sony Xperia devices.

This means that the Dualshock 3 controller will soon enable Sony Xperia owners to enjoy full wireless gaming support for Android and PlayStation mobile games without the need for additional software.

Spied by the Xperia Blog, the functionality was seen in the settings menu of the upcoming Sony Xperia SP mid-range handset.

Within the settings menu Sony has added a DualShock 3 wireless controller menu option, allowing users to connect the controller to the smartphone.

At first, controllers will need to be connected via an USB-OTG cable, but once they are paired in this manner the phone and controller will connect automatically via Bluetooth.

From the DualShock 3 menu option users can also separate the connection between the two devices and power down the controller. To re-connect, the user must simply hold down the PlayStation button on the controller.

As of yet it is currently not known whether the DualShock 3 controller support will apply to the flagship Sony Xperia Z, but with such a beautiful screen and high-end innards it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if such a function was soon available on the waterproof smartphone. It could also bring huge gaming potential to the likes of other Sony Xperia devices like the Sony Xperia Tablet Z.

Sony Xperia SP Features
Currently the only handset seen to support a DualShock 3 controller in this way, the Sony Xperia SP is the upcoming mid-range handset to compliment the Sony Xperia Z. Boasting a 4.6-inch 720p HD Reality Display with a 319ppi image density, the Sony Xperia SP also features the Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2 capable of making automatic adjustments to colour, contrast and sharpness according to the content currently displayed.

Playing host to an 8-megapixel camera in the rear, equipped with the Sony Exmor RS for mobile image sensor, the Sony Xperia SP is further bolstered by a 1.7Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of microSD card expandable internal storage.

The Sony Xperia SP features the nifty transparent element, meaning any texts, calls or other notifications will make it light up and change colour according to the alert. The colours also change according to the on-screen content and the music played. Alongside this, the handset offers NFC One-Touch technology and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS.
